NUJP Davao Statement – We are trooping to the Davao City Hall of Justice tomorrow, May 2, the eve of the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, in show of support to colleague Alexander “Lex” Adonis who was jailed for libel.

The motion to reopen the case which sent Adonis to prison will be heard tomorrow at the Regional Trial Court Branch 17 at 8 am.

The case docketed as Criminal Case No. 48, 679-2001 was filed by House Speaker Prospero Nograles against Adonis in 2001 for the latter’s series of reports and commentary on the “Burlesque King” scandal.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines NUJP) maintains that no journalist in the country should be jailed for doing his job. The fight for Adonis is a fight to decriminalize libel in the country.
