Appeal for help for journalists in typhoon-ravaged Panay

Dear media colleagues and friends,

This letter of appeal was sent to us by NUJP-Iloilo chapter, describing how journalists and media workers in Iloilo and other Panay provinces are struggling to cope with the devastation that typhoon Frank has brought to their own lives — the same typhoon that caused the ferry MV Princess of the Stars to capsize, killing almost 800 passengers. Even as they continue to report on the disaster, the journalists are themselves trying to find ways to deal with its impact on their personal lives and their communities.

Let us express our solidarity with our colleagues in Iloilo, Aklan and Capiz provinces, huge parts of which are still buried in mud, by giving whatever assistance we can give. Aside from material help, the NUJP Iloilo chapter has also called on crises experts to help colleagues deal with the secondary trauma as well as personal losses.

Please read the attached letter of appeal for more details.

Sincerely yours,
Rowena Paraan
