ABS-CBN news team harrassed by PDEA agents in  Sarangani

A cameraman of ABS-CBN was reportedly harassed by an agent of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 12  last Tuesday, March 1 in Maitum town, Maitum town.

ABS-CBN  cameraman Randy Estrella was told by the PDEA agent who refused to identify himself to stop filming saying,  “Bantay ka lang, ‘pag lumabas yan ” (You just watch out, if that ever comes out). When confronted by TV Patrol Socsksargen reporter Jay Dayupay, the agent said, “Parati niyo kaming binibira sa mga huli namin sa silway” (You are always criticizing our operations) referring to a PDEA drug raid last February 18.

The news team was in Maitum to follow up on a story on a drug raid by combined police and PDEA elements earlier in the day. Senior Supt. Florendo Quidilla, Provincial Director of Sarangani Police had confirmed the operation and had told the team that they recovered PhP 60,000 to PhP 70,000 worth of shabu.

Dayupay said the PDEA agent’s threats stemmed from previous reports which criticized PDEA’s handling of the earlier drug raid. ABS-CBN had aired stories based on complaints by residents that were the object of rough treatment by PDEA agents during the said raid.
Dayupay said they already lodged a complaint in the PDEA-12 office in General Santos City but PDEA-12 spokesperson Wilson Esparcia refused to identify the PDEA agent saying only that the incident was a result of a misunderstanding between the news team and the PDEA agents on the ground.

Dayupay said they also reported the incident to the Investigation, Detection and Management Section or IDMS of the Gensan police.
